How-To Password-protect a Directory

Contributed by James Hold    Sep 10, 2004

This feature is not intended to enable you to personalize content for each user. It is intended only to restrict access for a certain directory to specific individuals. You can add an unlimited number of username/password combinations.

To protect directories, you must log in to your cPanel. In the right column, under the Site Management menu, you will see a link that says "Web Protect." After you click this link, follow the steps below:

1) Click the name of the directory you wish to protect.
2) Click the checkbox next to the padlock at the top of the page
3) If you wish to name the protected area, you may enter the name in the next box down.
4) Click the Save button
5) When you return to the previous screen, you may enter a username/password, and then click "Add/modify Authorized User."

The next time you try to visit that directory, you will have to enter one of the username/password you selected in step 5.
